Case Study 2 - Network Rail Interactive 'Rail Reps' CD

Design, multimedia production, CD-ROM production and branded packaging.

For Network Rail, we were commissioned to design, produce and make all the content for an interactive CD-ROM for 'Rail Reps UK'. Network Rail had noted with concern the year-on-year increase of young people and children trespassing on Network Rail property or vandalising railway stock. These young people were largely unaware of the risks they were taking. 'Rail Reps UK' was a solution. It was decided that in each participating primary school there would be an self elected pupil who would take on the mantle of 'Rail Rep'. With the support of the teaching staff, and the CD, it would be their function to raise awareness of the dangers associated with abusing the rail infrastrucure with their peers. The CD would contain all of the information they would require to become the Rail Rep and due to the wealth of materials provided on the CD, could continue to develop and initiate activities, share information and raise awareness on an on-going basis.

Our brief was clear and straightforward - provide as much information on the CD as space would allow and make this information, young person friendly, exciting, interactive, colourful and engaging for young people.

After the initial splash screen, the Rail Rep CD has 7 main sections to choose from via an interactive railway timetable board. The first section is 'All you Need' containing many downloadable pdf's,  including blank certificates, membership forms, a year planner, 'Killer Facts' and all the stationery the Rail Rep will need for at least 1-2 years!

Other sections on the CD include:

'Rail Facts' - this allows the viewing of interesting on screen information so it can be incorporated into classroom tasks. There is also set downloadable pdf's for classroom activities.

The 'Hotspot Challenge' is an interactive multiple choice quiz for a group of pupils complete with buzzer sounds, timer and that authentic quiz feel.

An activities section, with arts and crafts tasks such as colouring-in sheets, word searches, puzzles, 'make your own newspaper' and many other downloadable pdf's.

A resources section which contains photographs, video clips and a downloadable book all of which highlighted the dangers of trespassing, risk taking, vandalising railway lines and the serious consequences of doing so.

A web link section provides the opportunity to visit websites of other organisations that the rail Rep might find useful and informative.
